Music Creation Process
Creating the soundtrack for Ragdoll Rumble was definitely challenging, but very fun to me! I composed each track based on the location of different battle arenas, ranging from dangerous temples, islands, to icy worlds.
Despite the variety of map themes, my intention was to compose all tracks based on a witch-themed setting with spells and potions in an open world. I have included a variety of synth elements and my own creativity into these tracks, to reinforce the idea of "magic" and different environmental sound elements such as "ice" (Blizzard Bridge), "wind against grass" (Hopscotch Isle), "magic spells" (Spelleporter), "rocks within an enclosed room" (Roller-Boulder Temple), etc, to accentuate the different themes of various battle arenas.
When I was producing this soundtrack, another main focus was to not forget the casual, fun and chaotic mood of the game concept. I think this is really important as this is what Midnight Horizon wishes to let players feel the most when they fight against each other in this fun couch-party game.
Music Development
I am always hoping to improve my music and make it the best it could be. In this project, I customised various music tracks to suit within each map level in the game. My main inspiration was often driven from the visual references of the level designs in the game's early development stages. Gaining feedback from game developers often helped me produce a better music product within the game context. I am featuring 3 tracks in this section to show how the tracks have been evolved and developed based on project feedback and collaboration.
"Blizzard Bridge" (Upbeat Ver.)
Before: Super heavy drums in the main chorus section and a slower tempo.
After: A slight change of drum pattern and softer dynamics in the main chorus section to make the track simpler and not too overpowering. Simultaneously, I have also increased the tempo and added subtle synth elements to make players feel more on edge towards the last minute of the battle.
--> Creates a lighter, less intense atmosphere to suit the casual action genre of the game, while still maintaining the exhilaration within the track.

"Spin Dungeon"
My initial process of creating "Spin Dungeon" was to manipulate strings as the main instrument as I wished to convey the "spinning motion" of the moving surface platform in the game level.
Before: Strings did not sound as realistic as it currently does.
After: Strings have been adjusted through reverb, volume automation, and ADSR envelope (mainly release). I have also added more layers in the strings.
--> The track sounds grander due to the better sounding of the surrounded strings.

♪ The regular version of Spin Dungeon is personally my favourite track from the album!
"Spin Dungeon (Upbeat Ver.)"
Before: The ending cadence didn't sound as "finished" as it currently is, which might have caused players to feel unresolved.
After: I have used tonic chord to make the ending cadence ended more satisfyingly in the last few seconds of the one minute upbeat version of the track. (*All upbeat versions were designed for the last minute of the battle match, and they were not designed for loop. Hence, I arranged and adjusted the timings/music sections of the original regular track to create all one-minute upbeat versions, so that players could further feel the intensity of the battle as it reaches the last minute).
--> Creates a more fulfilling ending sound by creating "witch" synthetic voices and manipulating tonic chord for the final battle ending moment.
